Civil registration of births, deaths, and marriages in France began in 1792. Because these records cover the entire population, are easily accessible and indexed, and include people of all denominations, they are a vital resource for French genealogy research. The information presented varies by locality and time period but often includes the individuals date and place of birth and the names of the parents and/or spouse. One additional bonus of French civil records  is that birth records often include what is known as margin entries, handwritten notes made in the side margin, which can lead to additional records. Unfortunately, online access to the indexes and digital images has been restricted to events older than  120 years by the Commission nationale de linformatique et des libertà ©s (CNIL). How to Locate French Civil Registration Records Locate the Town/CommuneThe important first step is to identify and approximate date of a birth, marriage, or death, and the city or town in France in which it occurred. Generally knowing just the department or region of France is not enough, although there are some cases such as the Tables darrondissement de Versailles which indexes the actes dà ©tat civil across 114 communes (1843-1892) in the Yvelines department. Most civil registration records, however, are accessible only by knowing the town — unless, that is, you have the patience to wade page by page through the records of dozens if not hundreds of different communes. Identify the DepartmentOnce you have identified the town, the next step is to identify the department that now holds those records by locating the town (commune) on a map, or using an Internet search such as lutzelhouse department france.  In large cities, such as Nice or Paris, there may be many civil registration districts, so unless you can identify the approximate location within the city where they lived, you may have no choice but to browse through the records of multiple registration districts. Tables Annuelles and Tables Dà ©cennalesIf the civil registers are available online through the departmental archives, there will generally be a function to search or browse to the correct commune. If the year of the event is known, then you can then browse directly to the register for that year, and then turn to the back of the register for the tables annuelles, an alphabetical listing of names and dates, organized by event type — birth (naissance), marriage (mariage), and death (dà ©cà ¨s), along with the entry number (not page number). If you are not sure of the exact year of the event, then look for a link to the Tables Dà ©cennales, often referred to as the TD. These ten-year indexes list all names in each event category alphabetically, or grouped by the first letter of the last name, and then chronologically by the date of the event. With the information from the tables dà ©cennales you can then access the register for that particular year and browse directly to the portion of the register for the event in question, and then chronologically to the date of the event. What to Expect Most French civil registers of birth, marriage, and death are written in French, though this doesnt present a great difficulty to non-French speaking researchers as the format is basically the same for most records. All you need to do is learn a few basic French words (e.g.  naissancebirth) and you can read pretty much any French civil register. This French Genealogical Word List includes most of the common genealogy terms in English, along with their French equivalents. The exception is the localities that at some point in history were under the control of a different government. In Alsace-Lorraine, for example, some civil registers are in German. In Nice and Corse, some are in Italian.

But on the other hand, there are people that do understand the energy crisis and are working hard to find and use new means that we can use for energy. This is the positive part of the energy situation, people with the knowledge of the energy problem that are trying to make small changes, in which individuals can do and the larger corporations that are trying to find and use new renewable resources to help with the energy problem. Recycling is one of the biggest ways to help with trying to better our planet. This ives people a chance to reuse materials that otherwise would be sitting in landfills. Also there are people that are trying to use waste as a form of energy. There are also products such as bio fuel that is taken from animal oils and vegetable oils that we are now being able to use as fuel in vehicles. Tom Capehart stated in November 2008 that there are increased benefits to using biodiesel because it is made from low cost, diverse, non food feed stocks. Who knows, maybe in the future we might be able to use this form of fuel for another type of energy. I feel that by making people more ware of the problem then more people will get involved. Another way to help with sustainability is to reduce the consumption of natural resources and materials. As with anything we can maybe end up using all of the renewable materials that can make up a new form of energy. One other way would be to maximize energy efficiency. As for my sustainability plan, one of the first things that would need to be addressed would be that we are in an energy crisis. I would want to maybe travel the country preading the word of the damages that we are doing to our world and get people informed on the topic. I would want to try to get as many people involved in the support to conserve energy. To get this plan started, I would first start telling people and groups that I would be traveling to spread the information on energy conservation and what the future could hold for use if we do not make the much needed changes. I would want the word to get out about this issue. Second of all I would do some time of fund raiser at each stop I made to raise money for research for other forms of energy. Lastly I would travel the country talking to audiences about the damages that we have done to our planet and what we can do to help fix some of the mess that we have made. I would also offer information that people could take with them after the meetings so that they could read up on more information on the energy crisis. I would ask tor sponsors or ditterent groups to help suppo t rt ne cause and some ot the funding for materials and the traveling to get the word out on this issue. As far as when I would do these meetings, well I would contact schools and energy sellers and ny other type of large group that I could schedule a meeting with. I would try and set the meetings up two weeks apart so that I could allow time for travel and depending where the location was. I would set out at first on a six month tour and try to reach as many people as I could my state. If all went well with that, I would continue on to another state and another after that. Time would vary from place to place, but dedication plays a big part in getting something done about a very real problem. I believe that the benefits of my plan would be getting the information out to people hat do not know much about this problem or that are not aware of it at all. I think that by doing this, this might give people the push that they might need to start to help make a difference in their everyday lives. Some of the challenges that I may face could be the disregard of the information by some. People are used to living the way they have always lived. Sometimes it is hard for some people to make changes. People may also feel that this is not as bid of a problem or that it is not affecting them right now, so why worry about it. Another roblem that I could face is that maybe I might not get much funding or not enough places that would like for me to speak at. This would be hard to get information out to people and to get more people to help with energy conservation. I think that if the government, society and with global support we would start to see some big changes. The government alone has a lot of pull and influences on what people in society do. If the government did more to get information out to people about the energy crisis that we are facing and gave people ways to help with this roblem, I think that would influence many people to change the way the live to help with the energy problem. If society was more informed on the issue, then I also believe that many would try and do their part to help as well. As for globally, if the whole world were to pitch in and help get the word out about energy conservation, then I strongly feel that we would see some very good changes. Conclusion We are in an energy crisis, which is a very big problem. People need to become more aware of this problem and try to do their part to help preserve the non renewable esources that we still have left and to also help the environment by recycling and watching the energy use at home and in the car. One person can only do so much, and we may never see a difference from one person making that change. Its very unfortunate that some people learn these traits as children and they then carry them into adulthood and they never learn to break the cycle no matter what type of diversity training or even diverse people they are exposed to (Woos, 2011). The Hispanic community is one of the fasting growing minority in the United States; yet Hispanic people are definitely one of those groups that are targeted quite often (Woos, 2011). Often times its automatically assumed that they dont speak or understand English Just because they may have an accent. Its important that people treat people how they would like to be treated because you never know when your race, culture, sex, age, etc. Will be targeted next. Its also important that we dont engage in those types of behaviors or conversations with other people who are engaging in those types of behaviors because it can ultimately send a signal stating that the behavior is acceptable when it actually is not. There definitely needs to be more diversity training because a lot of people dont know how o interact with people who are not the same as them. Because of their accent, a lot of people often speak slowly to Hispanics Just assuming that they arent comprehending. Here are a list of some of the more common myths: They dont speak and/or understand English They are all illegal immigrants They all have large families (lots of children) They prefer labor/blue collar Jobs These are all myths that many people have heard before. These simply are not true. In fact, all of these statements can hold true for Just about any culture there is. There are some Hispanics who are bilingual and there are some who dont even peak Spanish at all. Its fair to say that they prefer labor/blue collar Jobs. There are many well educated Hispanics who are Dentists and Doctors, lawyers and paralegals out there that love what they do and would not prefer a blue collar Job. There is an increase in workplace bullying that is going on and it really has to stop (Lava Martin, 2008). These workplace bullies are causing unnecessary stress to people for no reason. In order to make sure that this workplace bullying stops; mandatory training will be introduced. Also, during this training there would be some role playing to keep everyone thinking. Sometimes people need to place the shoe on the other persons foot for they can truly understand what they experience personally for themselves. This also need to be a continuous effort on behalf of the company because unfortunately these types of reminders are necessary in order for people to understand certain things; especially things that are not a priority for them. This survey signifies the rate of union Jobs that have been secured by the increasing Hispanic population throughout over a 30 year period: According to Responded Clambake (2009) this study shows the declining unionization and growth of the Hispanic population. Employer Interviews The interviews began with Ms. Mean (Molly) Dimmitt]evict, who is the co-owner/ manager of Victor Bakery in Highland Park, Michigan. Although Victor Bakery is a relatively small family owned bakery and only employs approximately 10 people, they do take the necessary steps to make sure they are diverse with their hiring process and to make sure that their staff is diverse because they have such a diverse cultural base. Mean and her sister Dona are both co-owners of their family owned bakery located in Highland Park, Michigan. Mean and Dona were born in Yugoslavia and have since taken on American names, Molly and Donna. They took over Victor Bakery about 15 years ago once their parents were too old to run it. The bakery does cater to a very diverse population because of the location. They are located on a main street the leads into downtown Detroit so there are always different people in there constantly even though they are located in a predominantly African American city/ neighborhood. Because they are a privately owned small company they typically post help wanted ads in the store for their customers to see, they typically get commendations from their regular customers, and they also post ads online as well when they are hiring. Molly states that she also provides an employee handbook to make sure that all of her employees are well aware of their policies and procedures. This handbook also has a section on diversity as well because they want make sure that their employees can all handle working with diverse people. Although Molly and Donna moved here as children they still have their heavy accents and their cultural beliefs that they still practice. The bakery actually has Molly, Donna, Mollys husband Danny and their cousin Victor, they also have 6 African American females who work there as well. Although they seem to be doing well with it, think one thing that they could also do that may be a cost effective way for them to provide their employees with diversity training is to maybe have them watch videos of diversity awareness. The next interview was conducted with Ms. Tamari Johnson, principle of University Preparatory Elementary School in Detroit Michigan. According to Ms. Johnson she strictly hires according to who is better qualified for the Job. Ms. Johnson states that her goal is to give everyone a chance. Though the school is located in a highly populated African American community, the area has become more diverse over the years and slowly but surely the students who attend the school are becoming more diverse as well. The school posts Job offers on its own website, indeed. Com, and most of the charter school staff and substitute teacher Job boards. Ms. Johnson, who is African American, states that she has a staff that consists of 1 Indian (female) teacher, whos married to a Caucasian man that comes to visit and volunteer at the school frequently, 1 Chinese teacher(female), 1 Middle Eastern Janitor (male), 7 African American teachers (1 male 6 female), 2 African American office staff members both female, 6 Caucasian teachers (4 females 2 males), and 3 Caucasian staff members that hold other position is in the school; 2 of them males 1 of them female. Ms. Johnson obviously hires a very diverse work staff based on their skill set as well as their attitudes towards the children they will be working with and not solely based on her race or the majority of the population of the schools population. She does state that it is important for her to have teachers of color because it is an inner city school ND its important to show the students someone to look up to that looks like them, however it is equally important to show them diversity at an early age so that they can take that into their later years. She states that she feels that the students arent getting what they deserve by not exposing them to teachers of diverse backgrounds. According to Ms. Johnson when she hires anyone she is sure to have them read and sign a handbook that outlines their diversity policies and procedures that are according to the entire district. They also go over a diversity presentation during orientation once they are hired. They are strict and have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to diversity and acceptance/respecting others. This goes for the staff and it also goes for the students as well. The other employer interviewed with Ms. Christina Brothers, manager of the Sprint retail store located in the busy suburb of West Bloomfield Michigan Just about 35 minutes away from Detroit Michigan. West Bloomfield is a primarily Caucasian city with a median household income of about $102,000. Ms. Brothers is an African American single mother of two who lives in Detroit, which is primarily African-American with a median household income of bout $25,000 dollars annually. Ms. Brothers says for that reason she tries to be extremely diverse when it comes to hiring employees for her store. She does not judge for candidates based on their zip codes and she gives everyone that is qualified a fair shot at the Job. Although the city is primarily Caucasian, there are other races who live and work in the area that visit the store and she does try to reflect that with her staff in her store. There is 1 Indian employee who is also the assistant manager there are 5 Caucasian men, there are 3 Caucasian females and 2 African American females including her that work in the store. She stated that she posts her openings for the Jobs that are available online on the online Job boards as well as referrals from other people, as well as in store postings. Because of the nature of this Job Ms. Brothers sates that they also have a strict zero tolerance policy when it comes to diversity and accepting/respecting ones differences. Because they not only work with each other, but also get a lot of foot traffic in the store and have to greet these people face to face, they have to make sure that any negative feelings awards anyone for their race, sexuality, culture, etc. Is totally turned off and that they are customer oriented and treat each customer like they would want to be treated. Because it is a Sprint Store they usually have their training electronically during orientation as well. They too have to sign a handbook that discusses the policies and procedures that the company has in place to make sure that they not only hire but train the most diverse and well qualified individuals for the positions. This particular Sprint store, Just like University Preparatory Elementary both do not have any Hispanics working there at this time. When asked, both employers stated that it was not something that was overlooked or purposely ignored, it was Just because they did not have enough qualified candidates to apply for the postings. Recommendations For my recommendations I would definitely have to take some pointers from my interviewees. The all had great ideas for how they handle diversity in their respective workplaces, which were all diverse establishments. This workshop/ training that will be offered will not be the same type of training that employees normally dread. Initial Assessment In order to begin to try and create a diverse atmosphere in a not so diverse atmosphere one must first assess that atmosphere. It will include interactive games and exercises that will engage the employees into wanting to know more. The training will also teach management on the importance of making their diverse staff of want to stay with the company (Enchilada, A, 2011). Through this assessment it should become more clearer how to conduct he diversity training; whether or not it should be an ongoing training, testing, one on one counseling, group training, and just information being passed out. The purpose of this initial training would be basically an assessment to pick everyones brains to see where everyone is on the subject. The goal is to try and have everyone on the same page and getting along before any real issues arise during training scenarios. The bottom line is that everyone has and should have the right to work in a diverse atmosphere. This atmosphere should be free from hatred Judgment, and should always respects ones differences, even if you dont agree with them. Getting to the Bottom Line Getting to the bottom line will be determined from that initial assessment. Normally when individuals are more aware of diversity and what they should or should not be doing it becomes more clearer and they begin to take more responsibility for their role in both creating and maintaining that environment. Employees should also be more aware on how to improve workplace relationships as well. This is a factor that definitely plays a major role in diversity training and diversity awareness because it should help to open communication skills which will also improve work ethics and teamwork. After the employees needs have all been assessed and it is determined hat type of diversity training is necessary for the group then it is equally important for things such as team building exercises and the posing of critical thinking exercises to boost the actual results of the training. Finding a Solution With finding a solution there definitely take a lot more research because as people change, their circumstances change as well. Having a code of ethics is one step closer to having everyone on the same page. Theres really no guaranteed way to keep everyone focused on being diverse and accepting others whether black, white, Hispanic, Asian etc. The code of ethics brings them one step closer to being unified as a group. Two Halves of the Same Song â€Å"My mother believed you could be anything you wanted to be in America† (526). This is the first sentence in â€Å"Two Kinds† by Amy Tan spoken by the narrator’s point of view, Jing-mei, the daughter. The story was a direct reflection of love vs. rebellion with the mother and the daughter, presented in a humorous almost sounding sarcastic tone to show the two kinds of people in the story; the one the mother thought the daughter should be and the one the daughter thought she should be, and in the end they realized that that was the same person. The story begins by giving humor to some of the mothers beliefs as if they were silly; such as in America a person is unlimited to what they could be even if that is to be famous or simply a homeowner, To understand what the mother meant you would have to know a little about her background and where she came from. She was from China where women didn’t have very many options on what their role in life could be, so for her daughter she felt that there were endless possibilities. Her mother in my eyes was more of what we like to call â€Å"stage moms†. She hoped for her daughter to be the best at something, anything instead of nothing at all, so she came across pushy verses loving. One would think that these were the mothers dreams trying to be fulfilled through the daughter. Jing-mei started to feel like she had to be someone she wasn’t in order to make her mother proud. She said â€Å"I was filled with a sense that I would soon be perfect. My mother and father would adore me† (527). Apparently she felt like if she wasn’t great at something they wouldn’t love her. The narrator makes it seem like it was the mother all along who wanted the daughter to be something she wasn’t, but at one point the daughter wanted to succeed just as much as much as her mother did, but the fear of failure and rejection stopped her. Next came the piano lessons. The idea of Jing-mei playing the piano was odd, because her mother was watching an American TV show and saw a young Chinese girl playing. â€Å"Ni-Kan† her mother would say which meant, you watch, and then made her practice the piano day after day to become better than the Chinese girl on TV. After this point the daughter rebels against the mother trying to fail to prove that this is who she was, â€Å"ordinary†. If she didn’t try at anything she couldn’t fail. The daughter didn’t realize how proud her mother was of her just for trying. In the earlier days when you were born you were born into a certain class, and that class defined who you could become in life whether it be a king, farmer, merchant, or a blacksmith. In this story the situation seems very similar. Why would Jing-mei want to be famous or talented when her mother was merely a house cleaner? Maybe she was content with the life she was born into and didn’t feel as if she needed to be talented to be happy. Her mother put her in a recital bragging to her friends how Jing-mei loved to play the piano. This was her opportunity to show her mother who she was and it wasn’t the person she wanted her to be, so Jing-mei went up and played horribly. However, through all of the disobedience trying to stay true to who she was, which seemed to be a slacker, the mother still pushed her to try and not give up. Years later the mother dies and Jing-mei realizes that her mother truly did love her and was proud of her. She only pushed her because she wanted her to be the best at who she wanted to be and let her know that just because you are born into a certain lifestyle that doesn’t define who you are, you define who you are. The tone of the story begins to sound happy verses the angry, sarcastic, and once comical tone making fun of the mother. Jing-mei actually starts to get the point her mother tried so hard to install in her. One of the last sentences of the story caught my eye. It seemed to sum up everything in the story and why the conflicts of interests occurred. â€Å"And after I played them both a few times, I realized they were two halves of the same song†(534). Two halves of the same song could have been the title for Any Tan’s short story. The mother and the daughter both wanted the same things: for the daughter to be happy, and be the best at what made her happy but looking at it from only one way you would not have figured that out. In this story it was told solely from the daughters point of view. If the mother were to narrate this story it would have been completely different. Maybe she would have not seemed as so unhappy with her life that she had to live it through her daughters, but the daughter would have seemed as someone who didn’t care for there mothers affection and just wanted to be disobedient. There is always two sides to a story but in this case they seemed to be arguing the same story. â€Å" Two halves of the same song†(534).

Over the past two decades there has been increased competition among cities, regions and countries to host mega sporting events Therefore Government and other proponents of major sporting events usually seek to back up their claims of the event providing an economic boost by commissioning an economic impact statement. For example, Economic Research Associates (1984) study of the Los Angeles Olympics, Humphreys and Plummers (1992) study of the Atlanta Olympics, and KPMG Peat Marwicks (1993) study of the Sydney Olympics. Hosting a sport event has revealed a number of benefits in our communities and of those benefits, some reasons like increasing community visibility, positive psychic income, and enhancing community image are all common and acceptable postulations.   Economic impact in sporting events can be defined as the net change in an economy resulting from a sport event and the change is caused by activity involving the acquisition, operation, development, and use of sport facilities and services (Lieber and Alton, 1983)which in turn generate visitors spending, public spending, employment opportunities, and tax revenue. Sports Economics possesses substantial experience in economic consulting to the sports industry, with specific knowledge of the economic impact of facilities, events, and teams so considering the publicity and scrutiny surrounding such studies, it is imperative to select a firm that not only has substantial experience, but also has a reputation for consistently providing an accurate assessment of economic impact. There are following reasons to conduct economic impact studies of sport events and Firstly, because many sport events in our communities were financed by public tax support, economic impact studies continue to be an important public relations tool for city government. Finally, positive or negative economic results of sport events may be an important method to determine communities draft budget for the coming year so as an example in July of 2001, Beijing was awarded the 2008 Summer Olympic Games so most people assume that such an event will bring enormous economic benefits to the host city not just dur ing the event, but for years afterward. The scale of the organization, facilities and infrastructure required for such a huge undertaking are such that the Games cannot but have substantial economic effects (Sydney 2000 Games, p 2) but what exactly are these economic effects, and how do they affect the quality of life of local residents? The relevance of studies for example, such as these to the Beijing games depends in part on the similarity of the economic conditions in China to previous hosts so it seems logical that a less developed country will have more to gain from long term growth opportunities. Matheson and Baade (2003) argue, however, that the prospects of mega-sporting events are even worse for developing countries and the opportunity costs of providing state of the art facilities are much higher and lack of modern infrastructure requires significant additional investment. Literature Review on Economic Impact Studies Precursor The aim of this literature review is to understand direct and indirect impact of major sports events on economy and understand how major sports can open new dimension in economy. This has been done through referring various journals, articles and magazines; also a survey has been carried out as part of primary research to analyze impact of major sports event on Economy; however validation of data collected is subject to sources and prevailing conditions. Final phase of this study on IPL covers analysis of contribution of IPL to Indian economy, It analyze that how IPL has opened a new dimension for Indian economy to grow and attracts domestic and foreign investors. This phase also covers SWOT analysis of IPL, reasons critical to success of IPL and future ahead. Statement of Purpose Previously many research studies have contributed to understand economic impact of sport and/or recreational events; however most studies are based upon the researchers personal perception and arguable methodology. Therefore, construction of truly scientific objects implies a break with common representation s, which can notably be effected by taking these pre-notions as the object of study so this report examines the wider benefits that move beyond the economic impact and proffers the adoption of the balanced scorecard approach to event evaluation. This consolidated piece of research builds on the original Measuring Success in 1999 which was based on the premise that major sports events have the potential to achieve significant economic impacts for the host town, city or area but economic impact is now one of the parameters upon which an events success is measured.   Countries, who host the mega sports event, should make a roadmap for significant investments in sports venues and other infrastructure. It is generally assumed that the scale of such event and roadmap of the preparation for it will create large and long lasting economic benefits to the host country. This would result in huge economic benefits that would have significant economic impact. However unfortunately these studies are constructed around misapplications of economic theoretical framework that virtually guarantee their projections will be large. Ex-post studies have consistently showed no evidence of positive economic impacts from mega-sporting events even remotely approaching the estimates in economic impact studies. For example, in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China have put up huge investments in infrastructure and facility recreation to a new level. The opportunity for long term economic benefits from the mega sports event like Beijing, critically depend on how well mega sports events related investments in venues and infrastructure can be incorporated into the overall economy in the years following the Games In current scenario economic impact studies have become standard operating procedure for supporters of public funding for sports events. It has led to acceptance of their findings by the government and public due to their prevalence with no critical evaluation. Due to the huge investment involve in such high profile mega sports events, large and positive Economic effects are taken as given; the studies confirm what is already believed. Two Halves of the Same Song â€Å"My mother believed you could be anything you wanted to be in America† (526). This is the first sentence in â€Å"Two Kinds† by Amy Tan spoken by the narrator’s point of view, Jing-mei, the daughter. The story was a direct reflection of love vs. rebellion with the mother and the daughter, presented in a humorous almost sounding sarcastic tone to show the two kinds of people in the story; the one the mother thought the daughter should be and the one the daughter thought she should be, and in the end they realized that that was the same person. The story begins by giving humor to some of the mothers beliefs as if they were silly; such as in America a person is unlimited to what they could be even if that is to be famous or simply a homeowner, To understand what the mother meant you would have to know a little about her background and where she came from. She was from China where women didn’t have very many options on what their role in life could be, so for her daughter she felt that there were endless possibilities. Her mother in my eyes was more of what we like to call â€Å"stage moms†. She hoped for her daughter to be the best at something, anything instead of nothing at all, so she came across pushy verses loving. One would think that these were the mothers dreams trying to be fulfilled through the daughter. Jing-mei started to feel like she had to be someone she wasn’t in order to make her mother proud. She said â€Å"I was filled with a sense that I would soon be perfect. My mother and father would adore me† (527). Apparently she felt like if she wasn’t great at something they wouldn’t love her. The narrator makes it seem like it was the mother all along who wanted the daughter to be something she wasn’t, but at one point the daughter wanted to succeed just as much as much as her mother did, but the fear of failure and rejection stopped her. Next came the piano lessons. The idea of Jing-mei playing the piano was odd, because her mother was watching an American TV show and saw a young Chinese girl playing. â€Å"Ni-Kan† her mother would say which meant, you watch, and then made her practice the piano day after day to become better than the Chinese girl on TV. After this point the daughter rebels against the mother trying to fail to prove that this is who she was, â€Å"ordinary†. If she didn’t try at anything she couldn’t fail. The daughter didn’t realize how proud her mother was of her just for trying. In the earlier days when you were born you were born into a certain class, and that class defined who you could become in life whether it be a king, farmer, merchant, or a blacksmith. In this story the situation seems very similar. Why would Jing-mei want to be famous or talented when her mother was merely a house cleaner? Maybe she was content with the life she was born into and didn’t feel as if she needed to be talented to be happy. Her mother put her in a recital bragging to her friends how Jing-mei loved to play the piano. This was her opportunity to show her mother who she was and it wasn’t the person she wanted her to be, so Jing-mei went up and played horribly. However, through all of the disobedience trying to stay true to who she was, which seemed to be a slacker, the mother still pushed her to try and not give up. Years later the mother dies and Jing-mei realizes that her mother truly did love her and was proud of her. She only pushed her because she wanted her to be the best at who she wanted to be and let her know that just because you are born into a certain lifestyle that doesn’t define who you are, you define who you are. The tone of the story begins to sound happy verses the angry, sarcastic, and once comical tone making fun of the mother. Jing-mei actually starts to get the point her mother tried so hard to install in her. One of the last sentences of the story caught my eye. It seemed to sum up everything in the story and why the conflicts of interests occurred. â€Å"And after I played them both a few times, I realized they were two halves of the same song†(534). Two halves of the same song could have been the title for Any Tan’s short story. The mother and the daughter both wanted the same things: for the daughter to be happy, and be the best at what made her happy but looking at it from only one way you would not have figured that out. In this story it was told solely from the daughters point of view. If the mother were to narrate this story it would have been completely different. Maybe she would have not seemed as so unhappy with her life that she had to live it through her daughters, but the daughter would have seemed as someone who didn’t care for there mothers affection and just wanted to be disobedient. There is always two sides to a story but in this case they seemed to be arguing the same story. â€Å" Two halves of the same song†(534).

It is the abbreviated form of the Latin expression et alia (or et alii or et aliae, the masculine and feminine form of the plural, respectively). The abbreviation et al. often appears in academic documents. It is generally used in footnotes and citations: for example, when a book has multiple authors, et al. can be used after the first name to indicate that there are more than two other authors who worked on the project.   How to Use Et Al. Et al. can be used in a situation that refers to more than two people. Make sure it’s always followed with a period, which indicates that it’s an abbreviation, but given its prevalence in the English language, italicizing it is not necessary in reference citations, though some publications may require it. According to the APA, it should only be used when there are two or more authors. For three to five authors, all names must be listed within the first citation, but all following citations can include just the name of the first author and et al. For six or more authors, the first author and et al. can be used in all citations, including the first. If you’re referencing sources with many of the same authors, spell out as many names as possible before using et al., until there is no room for confusion. If using a different style guide, be sure to reference the corresponding manual as rules can differ. Keep in mind that since et al. is plural, it must apply to at least two people. For example, if you are dealing with four authors and have typed out three names, you cannot use et al. to substitute the last one, since it cannot be used in place of just one person.
